Political venting

This is just a quick vent.

  • We’re set to blow past 1.5° global warming due to climate change.
  • The Iran War has spiked oil prices. The rational thing to do is decrease oil dependency, so we’ll be more insulated from price shocks. This means giving people alternatives to driving, expanding transit, work-from-home mandates, whatever.
  • Instead, the federal government suspended the federal gas tax. To provide a bit of relief at the pump, we’re reducing government revenue.
  • Similarly, Premier Eby excised BC’s carbon tax back in 2025. Now he’s talking about reducing the provincial gas tax as an election promise—keep in mind he triggered this election two years early because BC’s right wing is currently discombobulated.
  • Now Prime Minister Carney is pushing a new oil pipeline from Alberta to Vancouver, because we gotta sell all the oil we can.
  • The price of gas isn’t likely to go down anytime soon. Are we going to keep subsidizing fuel forever? Can we afford to?
  • All this while the climate increasingly destabilizes.

I hate this. I hate Premier Danielle Smith railing against the federal government while getting hand out after hand out. I hate Eby’s cynical election ploy, and I hope that this won’t hand over control to the same yahoos who torpedoed BC United and the BC Conservatives.

We’re facing challenges that are probably1 going to develop into crises. Instead of dealing with them, my political leaders are stalling.

I’m so frustrated.

  1. Certainly, when it comes to climate change.↩
