Endless Dungeon

If you’re a normie, you might not be aware that actual plays—Dungeons and Dragons (or other TTRPGs) played for an audience—have blown up in the last decade. The big one is Critical Role, which spun off its own system and even a TV show, but not too far behind is Drop Out’s Dimension 20. Brennan Lee Mullgian, D20’s standard DM, is on tour playing D&D for a live audience. I went to see him perform on Thursdays.

First of all, dude sold out the Queen Elizabeth Theatre. That’s one of Vancouver’s biggest venues. It’s where I saw David Byrne and Les Misérables. Dag.

Secondly, I assumed he was going to tour with folk from D20, but no! The players were all local performers: three of them are on the BlackwaterDnD livestream, and the other guy is from the Spout Lore actual play podcast. I don’t know how this came together behind the scenes, but the players were fantastic, and I appreciate that the show promoted them. They’ve posted some comments to a reddit post, including a link to Jesus Jean Chretien Sinclaire II’s epic character slideshow.

Lastly … it was D&D. They sat behind tables¹ and roleplayed. The Critical Hit Show has a lot of improv DNA, whereas this was much closer to what my group does every week, if cranked to 11.
