I have a tendency to immediately forget what I’ve been up to after a few days. If something happened more than a week ago, it might as well have taken place sometime last year. That’s half the reason why I keep this blog.

Case in point: I’d completely forgotten about everything below after (Please don’t sue us) Unaffiliated Task-Based Show.

Vancouver Rise FC vs Toronto FC - May 23rd

Last Saturday I went to see my first Vancouver Rise FC game. They play in the Northern Super League, which is a Canadian professional women’s soccer league. I didn’t know it existed until googling for more information right now, but that’s pretty awesome. At least we have one local football team that can’t threaten to move down to the States… 😅

They got off to an early lead of 2-0 in the first half, then held back a resurgent Toronto FC to a 2-1 finish. Huzzah!

A soccer match. Behind the field is an evergreen forest.

(Please don’t sue us) Unaffiliated Task-Based Show - May 21st

Have you seen Taskmaster? This is completely different—you can tell from the title—I don’t even know why I bring it up. Here’s the totally original idea: there’s a judge, their beleaguered assistant, and a panel of comedians who compete for points via various challenges. One task involved being the first person to receive a message from someone named Carl, which meant that the panel all whipped out their phones on stage. I took a picture, but my phone was in panorama mode.

An incredibly wide and blurry photo. You can recognize humans on the left, but it turns into mush as you go further to
the right.

Apparently this show is held every month at LMG. I’m going to have to check it out again. 😁

May long x2 weekend

I keep meaning to take time off, so in a recent one-on-one I told my team lead that I wanted to take the next Friday off. He pointed out that we already had a few people out that day, so I changed my request to the following Thursday and Friday instead, unaware that they were the last two days before May long weekend. Huzzah, five days off!

Did I get up to anything special? Not really. I crossed some chores off the list and went on some good bike rides. Still, it felt good to have that much time to recuperate. I should do this more often.

Critical Hit Show - April 29th

It’s still going. I’m still going. It’s hard to say anything new about The Critical Hit Show after all these years.

I don’t think this picture needs any context.

Three audience members with inflated sharks on stage menace the adventuring party, who are all wearing red-blue 3D
glasses.

Vancouver Canadians - April 26th

I have a friend who likes to get people together and watch a baseball game every year.1 Baseball is fun to watch live. It doesn’t demand the same focus as hockey, but it’s good as building exciting situations. When there are two guys on base, another two out, and the next batter steps up to the plate, you’re going to pay close attention.

I love the sushi race.

Trip to Calgary - April 17th to 20th

It was a very short trip. One of my nieces was having her First Communion on Easter Sunday, so I drove over to Calgary with my parents to attend. My sister threw a party afterwards … I don’t remember that being a thing when I was a kid, but it was fun. Then I flew back home on Monday.

It was a short trip. I got to practice driving: it was my first road trip since the last time I visited Calgary in 2022.

A picture of random prairie in Calgary. It's clear and sunny, but it looks wintery. You can see the Rocky Mountains on
the horizon.

Pilot Error - April 9th

Another comedy show at Little Mountain Gallery. By sheer coincidence, local comedians Ian Boothby and Eric Fell independently wrote pilot scripts for TV shows called Space Hole. They recruited fellow cast members from the Critical Hit Show and read them for an audience at LMG. The two had very different takes, with one important commonality: they riffed on Star Gate.

Five performers on stage reading scripts (mostly off phones).
