The empty stage before the show. On the sides are building facades, and the back of the stage shows a smokey
cityscape.

After listening to my cousin’s partner rave about it, I went to see Les Misérables at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre. It was actually my second time seeing the show there, but the first time we had seats in the back, and could barely make out any of the words or tell what was going on—plus it was over a decade ago. Somehow, despite that experience and cultural osmosis, I didn’t know how the story went.

I had a great time. The music’s fantastic. The plot moves shockingly fast: I knew that Fantine dies, but I didn’t expect it to happen so quickly. The villainous innkeeper and his wife are entertainingly despicable, and come out ahead in nearly every situation. And when the ghosts of Fantine and Éponine show up for Jean Valjean’s death, I gave up and let the tears come.

ONE DAY MOOORRREEEE!
