Overly Sarcastic Productions - Arch Madness

This is an extremely OSP video. You have Blue on one side, gushing about architecture and bringing up interesting bits of history from around the world. You have Red on the other, approaching everything from a more visual lens, and gleefully playing devil’s advocate (and sometimes lobbing in audience polling results like a grenade). I feel like I learned a bit at the end.

One of the arches in the ranking is the Gateway Arch in St Louis. I’ve been there!1 It’s something I knew existed, but I didn’t understand it at all until I saw it in person.

View of Gateway Arch from a park. Under the arch is an impressive domed building.

This is from the approach. It’s pretty cool, right? There’s this nice little park in front of the old court house, with the arch in the background framing it.

Gateway Arch by itself. There's a plaza out front, and parkland in the back. You can see the entrance to the museum hidden underneath the park.

The arch is a few blocks further away. It’s much bigger than the court house.

Looking from the ground beneath the arch back to the city. The people on the grass are tiny compared to the single leg
of the arch in the picture.

This is when you start to appreciate how absolutely huge it it. Look how small the people are.

A city skyline from up high. The horizon is perfectly flat.

This is from the observation deck at the top of the arch. You can see how the arch dwarfs almost all of downtown St Lousi. The court house is comically tiny in comparison. The arch is enormous.

  1. I’ve also seen the Arc de Triomphe in Paris, and the Wellington Arch in London.
