It took me about twenty minutes, from leaving my apartment, walking to the polling station, voting, and getting back home. It was much faster than the last by-election, although I’m less optimistic about the results.
Ultimately, I failed to take a deep dive into the various platforms. I had vague plans to do that on Sunday, but I was hung over from an impromptu party (Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again and whiskey are a potent combination), and after the tragedy at Lapu-Lapu Fest, I wasn’t inclined to think too much. My relevant tweets:
Some asshole drove their car into a crowd of people at a Filipino block party yesterday, killing nine people. The police haven’t said anything about motive yet, but it’s probably not a coincidence that the federal election is on Monday, and instead of mowing down people at the Sun Run today, they went after folk celebrating an immigrant culture.1 I’m upset, but it’s a sign of the times that I’m not more shocked and outraged.
Also, like, I love these street parties! Now the city’s probably going to make it even harder to run these things than it has been, and we’re already at the point where big stuff like Celtic Fest (our St Paddy’s celebration) and the Santa Claus Parade aren’t happening.
Here’s hoping the next government of Canada, regardless of party, meets the challenge of these times head on. And here’s hoping that we can continue to get together and celebrate our communities.
- I have zero evidence about the attacker’s motivations. This was my gut response.↩
