WNB-Yay!

The WNBA held a match here in Vancouver recently. It was the Atlanta Dream vs the Seattle Storm, and $WORK bought a bunch of us tickets to go see it. It was my second professional basketball game ever, the first one being the Vancouver Grizzlies back in the 90s. (I’m old.)

Before the game started, two players gave a quick little welcome message. The woman from Seattle said that as far as she was concerned, playing in Vancouver was a home game. That’s when I decided to cheer for Seattle.

The announcer and the DJ, however, wanted the crowd to rally behind Atlanta. I don’t know why they’d even pick a side, given that neither team was actually the home team. Whenever Seattle had the ball, they tried to get the crowd to chant “DEFENCE!” It didn’t go anywhere.

It took a little while, but I started getting into the game. Usually when I pick a random team to support, they end up losing the match; but Seattle had a strong lead at halftime. However, they took a lot of penalties. The second half was a slog, and Atlanta caught up. At this point the crowd rallied behind Seattle, and we started our own “DEFENCE!” cheers. It was neck and neck. In true sports fashion, the last 55 seconds of the game took thirteen minutes. Ultimately, tho, Seattle won by two points. Whoa.

It was a lot of fun!

Inside Rogers Arena, set up for basketball. The lights are dimmed. There's a spotlight on a corner of the court,
where the Atlanta Dream players are entering.

Atlanta takes the court!

Basketball court. The audience are waving their cellphones back and forth with their flashlights on.

Everyone took out their phones, turned the flashlights on, and waved ‘em around.

Players standing around on the court.

Someone probably just fouled.

A picture of the screens hanging over the court. The score is tied at 76. A referee confers with judges.

Seriously. It was a nailbiter. So many fouls.
